Exciting Garden Pictures!!!!!!!

Yes, folks, I have some boring garden pictures to show off. I just changed the title so my so-called-friends and family would actually take the time to look at my boring pictures.

Our garden is doing better than we expected. We have very hard clay for soil, and it needs humus added to it to keep it from packing up tight around our little plants' roots. We were able to get cow manure, leaves, and the litter from our chicken pen into three of the gardens, but one of the gardens-- you know, the one way down at the bottom of the hill that no one pays attention to--it didn't get anything, not even one shovelful of manure. It's doing its best in this 97 degree Arkansas summer heat, and we are getting lots of squash and zucchini out of it (I think squash and zucchini would grow on a four lane highway).

The other gardens--you know, the ones that get showered with attention and get weeded, watered, and manured (is that even a word?)--are doing pretty respectably considering this is our first real garden here.

Anyway, we're pretty happy with the results, and we thought we'd share a little bit of our joy with you.

Also, if you persevere to the end, there is a story in pictures of our not-so-little-baby Sam.

I am desperately awaiting home-grown tomatoes!

Our first broccoli head...well not really our first, those were greedily consumed by our rotten chickens.

Some of the "We Grow Anywhere" zucchini

The cabbage heads are huge! We are thrilled with how they're doing and can't wait to make lacto-fermented saurkraut.

This is the (weedy) cabbage patch. We probably have 30-35 heads.

We planted cucumbers soooo late, but they're doing really well.

Our onions. We have red and white.

EVIDENCE. CRIME SCENE. DO NOT CROSS YELLOW TAPE.

The chickens have excellent taste. As soon as a tomato even thinks about turning yellow, they are johnny-on-the-spot pecking away at it.

By the way, the date on my camera is obviously wrong. It was probably 40 degrees on that date.

Jalapenos.

I don't believe my keyboard has the capability to put a tilda above the "n" in jalapenos, so y'all will just have to pretend it's there.

I think this is a poblano pepper.

Unscathed tomatoes.

We had just picked the collards, squash, banana peppers and zucchini and then I remembered to take pictures, so here the left out veggies are.

Also, we just finished picking green beans. They're doing very well, and we are enjoying them immensely!

Sam -- the Sad, Sleepy Boy.

Meet Sam. Sam is sad. He's sad because he has to take a ...shhh... a nap.

Sam tries. He tries hard. He tries oh-so-hard not to take a nap.

Sam is wearing down. He cannot hold on. It is too hard. The pillow is too soft.

Sam has failed. The job was too hard for this little almost-three-year old. He thinks this job is better for Joey.

Meet Sam. Sam had a good nap. He had a good nap and a change of clothes. Life is better when Sam has a nap.

FOR ALL OF US!

What a nice garden! (or gardens) I love all those cabbages, and your daddy is pretty impressed, too!

He said to tell you he laughed and laughed at the Sad Sam story! Please tell Sam that life is better for EVERYONE when he has a nap!

Happy Birthday, Samuel!

Love,
Grandmother and Granddaddy

Awww..They were not boring! I've seen a lot more boring of garden posts. :D

It looks like the garden is doing great!!! Better than mine. :(
How are you keeping the chickens away from the cabbage and broccoli this time? My chickens loved mine as well. :)

Sweet lil' Sam! I believe Emma can relate to his pain.
I love y'all!

Love,
Sarah

Laughed out loud at the title!

Nice garden!

Aww, who couldn't like little Sam? (After his nap, that is.)

I voted on your poll, but I didn't really have an option that fit. I would say, I totally love the idea but I don't live there. I voted for the third option because it was the closest one to the one I wanted.

Sam is cute;
Sam is nice.
I read Sam's story
over twice.
In the end,
I was glad to see
That Sammy took
a long... nappie?

Well, be that Shakespeare or not, I was so glad that Sam finally gave up the struggle, and took (horror of horrors) a nap! He looked sleepy! (And he is so cute!)

Your garden looks like it is doing very nicely, and I do hope that the "rotten chickens" allow some of the tomatoes to reach full maturity!

Well, that's all. Just had to pop in and say hi!

I Love y'all!

I loved your "boring garden post" and read it within minutes of it being posted :)

Unfortunately I have been out and about on errands the last 2 days and this is the 1st time I can sit down, sign in, and compose my thoughts enough to actually comment intelligentally on your fun post!

The part about zucchini growing anywhere cracked me up! Zucchini Mock Apple Pie anyone?

We are really impressed with your abundance! Those cabbages are super!I am proud of you and all your hard hard work!

The little "Sam story" was adorable. I have an "Emma story" that reads much the same way, except unfortunately there's usually a pacifier involved.

Love you!
Beth

WOW! Your garden and the "vegetables of your labor" are amazing. We were thrilled to see the pictures! We were revited to our monitor and the expetation of viewing the next horticultural delight was almost unbearable. Alas, with some fanning, we were able to calm down and peruse the remainder of your blog with only slightly elevated heart beats. We're very proud of you. That cabbage is incredible.

And also, Katie, for you to know the name of the accent mark over the Spanish "n"... (these are elipsis, so there) You Frodge girls could teach Alex Trebek a thing or two ; ) "Alex, I'll take Jots and Tittles for $800, please."

You know, it just hit me that as to the date on those pictures... you know, that's less than a month after the ice storm. You guys have amazing green thumbs!! Unbelievable! ; )

Samuel was dreadfully cute. We sure miss you guys.

Love, The Franklins

PS We thought of starting a garden. Do you know where we can get some chicken litter?

I LOVED the Story of Sam! He is such a cutie, even when grumpy!
And even more adorable in that last pic of him smiling :)

Your garden looks GREAT! Please don't think the pictures are boring. You are proud of your garden, and you should be!
Don't diminish it by calling the pictures boring!
They are exciting (to me)! I guess that doesn't say much knowing me and my love for fruit, veggies, berries and growing anything. You know I always enjoy a good shot of a tomato plant or anything of that sort!
Keep up the good work and all that great composting! (Or manuring as well as you called it!)

Love and miss all of you!
Molly

Umm ... I hate to disabuse anyone of the notion that the Frodge girls could teach Alex Trebek a thing or two, but . . . the word is "tilde" not "tilda". Oh, wait, I am a Frodge girl, too! Guess that just shows that the only reason Katie has EVER beat me in Jeopardy is that she is quicker on the button!!!

We tend to take for granted the wonderfully fertile soil we have here down South, so seeing what you have grown and what you had to grow it in is quite impressive!! Your garden is marvy.

I love the sad sam story and that last picture is so great. It should be in a frame on a wall.

Keep growing green, but not "go green"!!
